08 June 2011

Upcoming events that Catholic youth and young adults may be interested in June - July 2011

"I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Paraclete to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth whom the world can never accept since it neither sees nor knows him but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you." Jn 16-17.

Hello all!

Really sorry that this has come so late - it's been a busy time, and as a result I've missed out on the first week of June's events. However, there is LOTS going on, especially that we're so close to Pentecost, and I seriously recommend you definitely check out what's good in the hood! Stuff from art, to fashion, to flash mobs, to balls, to pro-life prayer vigils, to festivals, to pilgrimages and many more. These are some great opportunities to meet other young Catholics (and Christians altogether) and make new friends, building an even bigger and more connected community, firm in the faith!

God Bless you during these summer months! Claz.

Chartres Pilgrimage 2011 Saturday 11th June 2011-13 June 2011
Begins at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, ends at Cathedral of Notre Dame de Chartres.
The Chartres Pilgrimage is a walk of prayer and penance to the glory of God and Our Blessed Lady. A three-day walk of 70 miles, makes this the largest pilgrimage of its kind in Western Europe, both in the distance covered and in the number of pilgrims. The pilgrimage included singing hymns, chanting the Rosary, open air Masses, all night adoration – the whole experience touches the soul and fills pilgrims with grace. You come away with a joy at being Catholic, and good friends who you have shared something very special with. People from all walks of life come along, and no one regrets this amazing experience. The camping and walking is not for the faint hearted! But it all adds to the experience. Masses are in the Old Rite (Latin), so it’s also a good way for people to learn about a Mass that they might not know about.
The pilgrimage is organised into chapters which walk under the patronage of a saint. The three British chapters are: Our Lady of Walsingham, led by Jamie Bogle and Francis Carey, St Edward (Youth/Juventutem) led by Michael Heinser and St Alban (Youth/Juventutem) led by Grace Readings.
More information can be found at the following link: www.chartresuk.blogspot.com or call Grace Readings on 07817 974018

This would be of particular interest to anyone who regularly seeks intercession from St. Edmund, and even anyone who belonged to Campion house at St. Mark's Catholic School.
Free. For more information, contact Peter Oliver on peterjoliver2000@yahoo.co.uk

Series of Psycho Spirituality talks
Saturday 2nd April 2011, 16:00-18:00 (and the Saturday following)
Our Lady Of Victories Parish Hall, 235 Kensington High Street, London W8 6SF
Do you think that there is a deep connection between physical health, psychological maturity and spiritual growth? Do you think that we are all called to achieve the interior harmony that makes us truly happy, as God’s dream for each of us? We might get stuck, or experience resentment, insecurity, and conflicts that are difficult to deal with. These can dim the light that burns within us and prevent us from being happier.
This series of workshops, lead by my wonderful SD Sr. Paloma Marchesi of the Carmelite Missionary Sisters, can help us root our life in the only source of trust: God, the Truth beyond tangible reality. It helps to understand our reality: feelings, doubts, conflicts, obstacles, etc.; to accept ourselves as we are and to develop practical tools for a spiritual healing, for living with deep joy and satisfaction, and for managing mature relationships. The series works as follows:
Saturday 19th March 2011, 16:00-18:00: "How to handle emotions" (refreshments offered)
Saturday 26th March 2011, 16:00-18:00: "Understanding difficult relationships and working through them" (refreshments offered)
Saturday 2nd April 2011, 16:00-18:00: "Centering Prayer" (refreshments offered)
Saturday 9th April 2011, 09:00-12:00: "Forgiveness and Reconciliation" (please bring packed lunch for the meal sharing)
Cost: A voluntary donation will be asked. The money collected won't be in anyway used by the Young Adults Group of the parish. The total amount will be dedicated to the personal needs of Sr.Paloma and her community. Feel free to invite anyone who might be interested in this topic! It will be great!

Lord Alton of Liverpool is a British politician. He is a former Liberal Party and later Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament (MP) who now sits as cross bench member of the House of Lords. He believes we need to be "pro woman and pro child; not just opposed to things but positively pro-life at every stage of human development." As well as energetically campaigning in this area, David has also written extensively on these issues. During this talk he will describe and articulate in detail how to build a culture of life.

And for more than 200 years, their blood and sweat would help to build the richest and most powerful nation the world has ever known. But when slavery ended, their welcome was over. America's wealthy elite had decided it was time for them to disappear and they were not particular about how it might be done. What you are about to see is that the plan these people set in motion 150 years ago is still being carried out today. So don't think that this is history. It is not. Diocesan House of Prayer, Abbotswick, Navestock Side, Brentwood CM14 5SH
Fr. Stefan Park, OSA, will lead this special weekend retreat at the start of Holy Week and will examine God's calling in the light of Jesus' calling of the disciples and the women in the Gospels. Despite three years of intensive training, Jesus' disciples, in the main, misunderstood their calling. At the end, only the women and John remained. And yet they all, apart from Judas, recovered and bore much fruit. How do we understand this? What lessons are there here for us? The retreat will take place at Abbotswick House of Prayer near Brentwood

Vocation Voices is an initiative to train young people to speak at the end of parish Masses on Vocations Sunday (15th May) about the importance of vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life. Volunteers need to be aged between 18 and 30... so if you know anyone that is confident, or has great public speaking skills and fits the bill, then defo get them contacting Fr. Group viewing of The Way
Friday 20th or Saturday 21st May 2011, evening time
Cinema in or somewhere near Leicester Square (location tbc)
As mentioned in my last email, the potential for a massive group of all my mates, and anybody else who is interested to go and see Emilio Estevez's The Way featuring Martin Sheen is possible! The original release date of 15th April has now moved to 13th May, but Edwin's concert is on that night, and HYT's Ball is on 14th. This means watching the movie on 20th or 21st.
This movie casts people's minds to The Way of St. James (El Camino) - the hardships, the rewards, the Spirit, the communities... the meaning of Life and Love. If you have read some of my blog reflections on LISS, you may have discovered that it was on El Camino that I experienced my conversion. El Camino was the way that brought me to encounter Christ, in the Holy Spirit, and through the Blessed Virgin Mary in the most profound and life-changing way. Considering El Camino is still very much alive in my heart (and always will be), I would like to invite ANYONE and EVERYONE to come and watch the Premiere of Martin Sheen's The Way with me somewhere in the West End. It is a movie NOT to be missed, and I shall feel sorry for the person who ends up sitting next to me... I hope they will bring lots of tissues! WATCH THIS SPACE and try to keep your diaries free for the Friday or Saturday evenings of this weekend as long as you can until I find out more! If you'd like to join me, please can you let me know by Tuesday 3rd May. I'd love it if at least 1 or 2 people came, but think it would be a much more awesome experience if 20 or even 30 people came! You can email me on pilgrim.claz@gmail.com if you're interested ;)

Upcoming Catholic Youth Events for March - mid April, 2011

Dear all,

Peace of Christ be with you for this next month, and most especially the Lenten Season beyond!

The WYD song contest has ONE UK entry, by my friend and lead singer of Ooberfuse: Cherrie Anderson! So please get yourself and all your mates to vote for her song if you like it! The footage is of Walsingham, and the message of the song focuses on the WYD theme. Don't forget to share the link ;) Voting is free and takes only 5 secs! http://madridmeencanta.org/ficha.php?id=109999207

SPEC are going through some big changes in the near future, so they're looking for 16 keen young Catholics (18-25) particularly from the Diocese of Westminster to volunteer away from home in what is sadly their final year at All Saints Pastoral Centre. If you're interested, check it out: http://www.spec.org.uk/section.asp?id=1666. They are also looking for Senior Programme Leaders as well as volunteers. Visit the RCDOW site for more info.

Please send in any April-Mid May events by Easter Monday, as I will be out of the country from 27th April so will be blitzing my next email out on or around Tuesday 26th April instead. Please also refresh me if you've already sent me information about April and May events back in January!

Lastly, I will not be on emails during the Lenten season (except for emergencies). Neither will I be on facebook. This also means I will not be emailing this information out to the people on my mailing list. If you wish to check what is happening, then you're welcome to view my blog, as it then becomes your free will to seek out the info rather than impose my presence on you! My communications will be limited during this beautiful period of prayer and silence. Thank you for your patience and cooperation in advance :)

Series of Psycho Spirituality talksSaturday 19th March 2011, 16:00-18:00 (and Saturdays following)
Cost: A voluntary donation will be asked and dedicated to the personal needs of Sr.Paloma and her community. Feel free to invite anyone who might be interested in this topic! It will be great!

Frassati Society meal and talk
Sunday 20th March 2011, 17:15
Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 36 Nightingale Square, Balham, SW12 8QN
The Frassati Society is a young adult apostolate which combines prayer, service of the poor, and community (specifically, hiking!) in the spirit of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati. At his beatification in 1990, Pope John Paul II named Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati 'The Man of the Beatitudes' - a model for young Christian living.  Each month as we come together for Mass and prayer, fellowship, food and formation, we will explore the richness and beauty of Jesus' teaching as we look at a different Beatitude each month. Fr Emmanuel CFR will be leading this session. As we are moved to live the Beatitudes more profoundlly in our life, the model of Pier Giorgio Frassati will be an example of how we can live out this call. The night kicks off with Adoration @ 17:15.

To get us started we have the amazing Holy Hour, which includes Adoration, worship music, Confessions, Evening Prayer and Benediction. For many this is a highlight of the evening – so don’t be late – as you really don’t want to miss out.
More and more people are finding out about Catholic Underground and they are coming from all over. Definitely invite your friends, but why not invite a group from your Church? Movie Premiere of Emilio Estevez's The Way
Date TBC but defo on the weekend of 15th April!
Location TBC
Ok... so most of you know me, and most of you know that I love El Camino. This movie casts people's minds to The Way of St. James (El Camino) - the hardships, the rewards, the Spirit, the communities... the meaning of Life and Love. If you have read some of my previous reflections on LISS, you may have discovered that it was on El Camino that I experienced my conversion. El Camino was the way that brought me to encounter Christ, in the Holy Spirit, and through the Blessed Virgin Mary. Considering El Camino is still very much alive in my heart (and will always be), I would like to invite ANYONE and EVERYONE to come and watch the Premiere of Martin Sheen's The Way with me somewhere in the West End.

Holy Week Retreat
Friday 15th- Sunday 17th April 2011
For more info and a booking form, see www.free2become.org.

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight." 1 Pet 3:3-4
